The T.I. Murphy Centre, named for a wonderful Christian Brother of Newfoundland, operates now in a portion of The College of the North Atlantic in St. John’s Newfoundland. The Murphy Centre serves approximately 100 students per year in supporting their academic efforts to return to mainstream education after their schooling was interrupted. The Centre also serves an additional 250 young people with assistance in training for job placement and the related life support skills. These students have not found success in the standard school setting and most are several years past high school age. The centre represents a final chance for these 19-24 year olds to secure the credentials for further education. Br. David Murphy and Br. Brendan Healy are among the 25 full time staff. The Murphy Centre stands now as one of the few educational efforts in this part of Canada where Christian Brothers are still engaged on a daily basis. Funding for the Centre is provided by the Newfoundland and Canadian governments and augmented by yearly Grants secured by the Co-Coordinator, Mr. Tim Turner , himself a former Christian Brother.
Br. Kevin Cawley, Coordinator for JPIC of ERCBNA, visited the site for several days recently to share the news of Edmund Rice International and our links to the United Nations in New York and Geneva.
Inspirational story. It is good to now that there are Edmund Rice people doing such good work in Newfoundland.
